Overview
The options for installing an application for Pocket PC allow you to define:
  • The characteristics of the application (provider and name of the application).
  • The default setup directory of the application.
  • The format of the setup.
To display the window for setup options, select "Setup parameters .. General options".
Characteristics of the application ("Description" tab)

Application provider

Describing the application consists in defining the information that will be displayed in the control panel of Pocket PC when a program is deleted.
The following information is used to describe the application:
  • Application provider
The application provider is the person (or the company) who published the application.
  • Name of the application
Name of the application. The name proposed by default corresponds to the executable name. This name may differ from the executable name.
Setup directory on the Pocket PC
Specify the default setup directory of the WINDEV Mobile application.
Caution: The directory must be specified according to the notation recognized by the Pocket PC (for example: "\MyApp").

Special case: setup performed on a Smartphone

The application must be installed on the "SD card" of the Smartphone in order to be used. Otherwise, when the Smartphone is switched off, everything that is not copied onto the "SD Card" will be lost.
If you choose to install the application in the "Program files" directory, the name of this directory will be automatically adapted according to the destination platform (for example, on a Smartphone, the setup will automatically use \Storage\Program Files\).
Setup format ("Format" tab)
  • To generate a setup in CAB format, select "Generate a setup for Mobile device (CAB format)".
  • To generate a setup in MSI format, select "Generate a setup for PC with ActiveSync or the Manager for Windows Mobile Device (MSI format)".
Regardless of the selected setup format, the updates can be performed by Internet. However, the updates must use the CAB format only.

Updating the application by Internet:

These options are used to update the application by Internet (HTTP protocol):
  • Frequency for checking the updates (every 2 days, every week, ...). If this option is set to 0, the updates will be checked whenever the application is run on the Pocket PC.
  • URL used for check: Corresponds to the Web directory into which the update will be copied (for example "http://MyServer/MyDirectory"). Two files will be available at this address:
    • a ".CAB" file corresponding to the update of the application
    • the "VERSION.WX" file containing the version number of the update.
When generating the setup, an upload of these files by FTP will be proposed. You can also transfer these files to the specified address by any other method.
  • Version number of the application. If the version number of the application installed on the Pocket PC is less than this number, the update will be proposed. This number can:
    • correspond to the version number of an executable.
    • be specified. This solution is recommended if the application contains several executables and/or if the application uses external components.
Important: These options must be specified when creating the initial setup program.
Special case: Using an IIS server:
If the update is available on an IIS server, the MIME type of the ".WX" file must be declared on the server. Indeed, if the server does not recognized the MIME type of a file, it will refuse to download it.
To declarer a MIME type in IIS:
  1. In the IIS service manager, display the properties of the Web site.
  2. In the "HTTP headers" tab, click the "Types of files" button found in the "MIME" section.
  3. Click the "New type " button and enter the following information:
    • Associated extension: .WX
    • Type of content: text/plain
  4. Validate.
Special case: Using an Apache server:
If the update is available on an Apache server, the MIME type of the ".WX" file must be declared on the server. Indeed, if the server does not recognized the MIME type of a file, it will refuse to download it.
To declarer a MIME type in Apache:
  1. Open the mime.types file. This file is available in the "conf" directory of Apache.
  2. Find the line that starts with "text/plain" and add "wx" at the end of this line. For example:
text/plain txt text conf def list log in wx
  3. Save the file.
