WDSurveillance: Parameters of server to monitor
Warning
From version 15, this feature is not available anymore. You now have the ability to monitor a Web server via the Monitoring robot.
Overview
The window for describing the parameters of the server to monitor contains the following tabs:
  • "General" tab: Describing the server to monitor.
  • "Contact" tab: Defining the parameters required to send emails if a problem occurs.
  • "Action" tab: Selecting the different actions to perform if an incident occurs on the server.
  • "Parameter" tab: Configuring the checks performed by the monitoring robot.
  • "Log" tab: Configuring the files used to list the checks performed on the server.
Note: To take into account the modifications performed in the description of the server parameters, the monitoring service must be stopped and restarted ("Start the service" button).
The different tabs

"General" tab

This tab is used to describe the server to monitor.
This tab contains the following information:
  • Server name
Describing the server to monitor. This description can be created ("Create" button) or deleted ("Delete" button).
  • Server address
Address of server to monitor, corresponding to the selected description.
    You can specify:
    • the name of a computer accessible via network. Example: "Test server"
    • an IP address. Example: 123.3.250.12
    • an Internet address. Example: www.webdev.eu
  • Web server to monitor
Type of Web server used on the computer.
  • Monitoring
If the monitoring is disabled, the selected server will not be monitored.
If the monitoring is enabled, the selected server will be monitored.

"Contact" tab

This tab is used to define the parameters required to send emails if a problem occurs.
This tab contains the following information:
  • Email address to contact
Email address of the person to contact if a problem occurs on the server to monitor.
  • SMTP server
IP address of server (outgoing protocol). This IP address can be:
    • IP address in XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX format
    • IP address containing the server name (smtp.freesbee.fr for example).

"Action" tab

This tab is used to choose the different actions to perform if an incident occurs on the server.
If a problem occurs, the selected actions are performed one after another as long as the Web server is not restarted.
Note: If the server is monitored from a remote computer, the only possible action consists in sending emails.
Actions to perform if an incident occurs:
  • Send an email to the manager
If an incident occurs, an email is sent to the manager (email address specified in the "Contact" tab). The "Configure the content of emails" button is used to enter the text of the email that will be sent by the monitoring robot.
  • Restart the Web server (not available for remote monitoring)
The Web server is stopped and restarted. This action only takes a few seconds.
  • Restarting the WEBDEV administrator (not available for remote monitoring)
The WEBDEV administrator is stopped and restarted. This action only takes a few seconds.
  • Run an external application (not available for remote monitoring)
This option is used to run an application accessible from the server. The "Configure the external application" button is used to run the application and to specify a command line if necessary.
  • Restart the computer (not available for remote monitoring)
The server is restarted. This action must be used with great care. If rebooting the computer does not solve the problem, the list of actions to perform will be run again. The computer may be restarted endlessly.
  • Advanced parameters: Notify all the actions performed by email
This option is used to send an email to the manager whenever an action is performed.

"Parameter" tab

This tab is used to configure the checks performed by the monitoring robot:
  • Time interval between two checks
A check will be performed every x minutes on the server.
  • Number of checks before action
The actions will be triggered once x negative controls have been observed.
  • Time interval after failure
Time interval (in seconds) before running a new check after a failure.
For example, if these parameters respectively correspond to "15 minutes", "5 checks" and "10 seconds", the following operations will be performed:
The monitoring robot will check the Web server and the WEBDEV engine every 15 minutes.
If a test fails, it will be retried 5 times with an interval of 10 between each attempt.
If all these tests fail, the monitoring robot performs the first selected action ("Actions" tab).
A new test is performed after this action. If this test fails, the second action is chosen and performed, and so on as long as the Web server is not restarted.

"Logs" tab

This tab is used to configure the files containing all the checks performed on the server.
This tab contains the following information:
  • Status report of the Web server
This file is used to save the actions performed on the Web server.
By default, this file will be named "Log<BackupDate>.TXT" and it will be created in the "Programs" sub-directory of the setup directory of WEBDEV.
  • Status report of the monitoring robot
This file is used to save the different actions performed by the monitoring tool: starting the robot, ...
This file will be created by default in the "Programs" sub-directory of the setup directory of WEBDEV.
